Summary:
This particular thesis focuses on the life and work of George Katsaros Theologitis. Beginning with a brief historical overview of outward migration in Greece, the thesis demonstrates the challenging circumstances that the Greeks faced emigrating particularly to the United States, which as shown inspired the songs of George Katsaros and many other song writers. In addition, the thesis refers to the music production of immigrants in the United States, and further outlines the ninety years long career of George Katsaros in America. Furthermore, it examines the involvement of Katsaros with various distinctive figures in America and the revival of rembetiko in Greece, as well as his return to Greece for a few concerts during the last period of his life. Nonetheless, the thesis introduces some new songs, enriching the already existing discographic lists with new ones, which have been collected through online research. Moreover, Katsaros’ “tsimpiti”, his unique technique for guitar playing, is examined and analyzed in the thesis explicitly. Using music records of six songs of Katsaros that have been collected in order to be analyzed, conclusions have been drawn about his style, genre, tuning, harmony and modality of the covers he made and the songs he wrote. In conclusion, the thesis provides an overview on the importance of folk guitar during the past and present of modern song writing.
