The Megaron of Children: An ethnographic approach of the Sunday educational programs of the Friends of Music Society (Syllogos oi Filoi tis mousikis) during the greek crisis
Summary:
The present essay explores a series of Sunday educational programs and performances of the Friends of Music Society as well as their relationship with the social, cultural and political background of the greek crisis. On Sunday mornings FMS propounds children and invites them to absorb musical sounds and information in addition to constructing a cultural identity through the participation in a solid series of musical events perfectly suited for them. The context of those programs -a country deeply immersed in an economic and political crisis- raises a variety of issues, questions and problems to be addressed. The current Greek society lives on a substrate of ethical disillusionment that resembles a thin surface of ice ready to crack. The new landscape does not leave much space for any sort of cultural initiative, much less for the field of Western Art music, an idiom directly related to the bourgeoise and the cultural elite. On the other hand, the attempts of reconstitution and reinvention of culture by organizations such as FMS compose an engaging contradiction. Each move and synergy towards the reinforcement of cultural innovation is being tested by its fate on the grounds of greek social and political decline; it will either steel its dynamic or be condemned to failure. The educational suggestions of FMS are endowed with the hue of persistence and resilience, an absolute necessity as a self-preservation mechanism. As to methodology, the case study is based on the field research of certain musical performances and programs that took place from October 2016 until January 2017 at the Megaron Concert Hall. The combination of participant observation, field notes and interviews from both organizational operators and participants imprints the multiple dimensions of a long-held cultural venture oscillating between survival and decay during one of the darkest chapters of the modern greek History.
