The impact of tuberculosis during the economic crisis in Greece
Summary:
According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis has been resurgent in recent years. Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that has been the world's leading infectious cause of death for both adolescents and adults and is the leading cause of death worldwide for HIV-infected individuals. In the present study, data were collected from the General Hospital of Chest Diseases of Athens "Sotiria", with the aim of monitoring the trend of the disease the period 2009-2015, studying the characteristics of the infected people, the correlation of disease progression with the country's economic situation and the assessment of the burden of the health system from the disease, and finally the comparison of the results of the research with national data. From the findings of the survey, the hypothesis that the economic crisis has led to an increase in new tuberculosis incidents, is being rejected, as the disease trend for the period 2009 to 2015 is downward, and neither the increased migration seems to have affected the progression of the disease. Moreover, it is encouraging the finding that the majority of people who are infected have a great deal of improvement or no deterioration. Additionally, concerning the burden for the insurance funds and thus for the state, there was an increase in the average cost of hospitalization per patient, which is due solely to the adoption of Closed Unified Health Expenditure. Lastly, it should be pointed out that there is no room for complacency, as the deterioration in the economy and the aggravation of the problem of migration are challenges for the health sector and they make the risk of disease outbreak big enough.
