Summary:
The aim of this thesis is to study the notion of citizenship in Greek primary school’s textbooks of Social and Political Education. The approach utilizes qualitative content analysis to examine the concept of citizenship primarily as the status of a person recognized as being a legal member of a sovereign state. More specifically, research is made on the similarities and differences between Social and Political Education textbooks published during the decade of 1980’s and contemporary textbooks as far as the profile of citizen is concerned. Additionally, the present study attempts tο show the compatibility between each curriculum and the corresponding textbooks. Finally, the study scrutinizes the characteristics that determine the citizen as a member of a state, of the European Union and the whole world, as well as the role of education in molding the future citizens.
