The main purpose of this essay is the exposition of functionalist version of social theory, which allows for the interpretation of the historical specificity of capitalism's functioning and its crisis in relation to the values which are embbodied in its institutions. This inquiry takes place within this context, while also raising epistemological issues in order to explore the current crisis and the reforms impacting educational institutions in fundamental way. An important function of educational institutions concerns the production of subjectivities, a thorough analysis of which requires a discussion of the role of desire, that is, of the desires that become embedded in subjects. The last section of the study, building upon the conclusions drawn from the inquiries described above, traces the mutations of the labor figure in the second half of the twentieth century, mutations which occurred in parallel with changes in the economic field. Finally6, a thorough examination of the conceptual an historical origins of the relationship between instituions and the development of capitalism is undertaken, followd by an interpretation of the current and future stakes for social theory and practice.
