Attachment type and self-world-future perception, in patients facing one or more autoimmune diseases
Summary:
Purpose: This research was aimed to investigate the association of attachment types and dysfunctional preconceptions of people about themselves, the world and the future. In this research a comparison was made of individuals suffering from autoimmune diseases and healthy population.

Method: The research involved 200 people. Of them, 100 were patients suffering from at least one autoimmune disease and the other 100 were individuals who were the healthy population. The survey participants were asked to complete a questionnaire of demographic characteristics, a questionnaire on the investigation of dysfunctional preconceptions of people about themselves, the world and the future «Dysfunctional Preconceptions Questionnaire» and a questionnaire on the investigation of the types of individual’s attachment "Revised Scale for experiences in the Near Relations».

Results: In both samples of the research the majority of the participants were unmarried women with an average age in healthy participants 35 years and in patients 28 years. As regards the sample of patients, it was shown that students compared with freelancers tend to be associated with other in a more stressful manner as well as people with a physical or mental illness. Also it appeared that older healthy individuals were more positive self pre-conceptions and self post-conceptions. In the sample of the healthy population, while negative pre-conceptions for the future did not seem to be related, nor the anxiety or the avoidable type of attachment, the negative post-preconceptions for the future seemed to be associated with anxiety type attachment. In the sample of patients, it was shown that people with anxiety type attachment show a negative view about themselves, about the world and the future. In addition, patients with avoidable attachment type exhibit negative view only about themselves. Moreover, the negative pre-conceptions about themselves and the future appear to relate only to anxiety type attachment, regarding the sample of patients. Comparing the two samples of research, it was found that we encounter most often people with autoimmune diseases in the wider family of patients. Finally, the survey results showed that patients exhibit more negative self image and more negative perception of the future than the healthy ones.
