Burnout assessment in practitioners volunteering for psychosocial services and organisations
Summary:
Aim: This study aimed at assessing burnout levels among volunteers in psycho-social services and organizations, with a degree in Social Sciences & Humanities and/or Health Sciences. Further, it aimed at discovering any possible correlations between the burnout levels and the duration of volunteer work. Method: 90 volunteer practitioners, providing work for 14 entities in Attica participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire with questions on the conditions of their voluntary work and everyday life. Burnout levels were assessed using the Greek version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results: The majority of participants were women (83.3%) and psychologists (58.9%) by profession. Burnout levels among the sample were low. The aggregate average for the sub-scales of emotional exhaustion amounted to M= 14.14; of personal achievement to M = 36.51; and depersonalization to M = 4.23. Minor differences were discovered in various sample groups. The most important finding was that participants who do not exercise at all are the mostly affected ones. On the contrary, those who had been exercising regularly during the last month were less affected. Furthermore, those who, during the study period or in the past, had undergone any kind of psychotherapy appear to be slightly more affected than those who had not undergone any kind of therapy during the respective periods. Finally, the sense of adequate training, information, monitoring, the feeling of satisfaction and achievement of one’s motives and expectations, as well as thinking about quitting the volunteer position, appear to correlate with specific issues of the burnout sub-scales. Conclusions: Appropriate volunteer working conditions and regular exercise possibly protect volunteers from burnout. Finally, the creation of a specialized tool for detection of precursor expressions of burnout feeling in active volunteers, the exploring of the role of individual characteristics, and the use of precautionary and aggravating factors management strategies would contribute both in the understanding of the burnout syndrome, and in the the early detection and intervention in order to protect volunteers.
