Summary:
In recent years, the Internet is a main source of information. New technological developments have contributed to the change of the transmission mode of news, which made them accessible to a mass audience. The characteristics of direct spread of an event in connection with the transition of journalism in the digital age have changed radically the relationship between the reader and the media. Traditional press in Greece records significant losses on its sales while the traffic on websites grows. This thesis examines how communication between a journalist and a reader has been developed and how a reader expresses an opinion on an issue in public. Key point of our research is the jump from the letters to the editor to online comments.
Through our literature research and interviews taken from people working in Greek newspapers and informational websites, we examine whether the dialogue that occurs on the Internet is more enliven, because of the feature of anonymity that provides, or if due to the lack of expressing an opinion eponymously is limited. Communication, thanks to the tools offered by the Internet is more interactive, evolves in real-time and remains accessible to all without boundaries. Thus, traditional media and the journalists themselves seem to be driven to radical changes in order to maintain and expand their audience, as they try to cope with the new requirements that the web revolution has brought.
