Reconstructing the concept of nation: Debussy and the "political" movement of Impressionism
Summary:
Focusing on the life and work of Claude Debussy, this dissertation examines the relation between nationality and tradition in France at the turn of the century, while exploring further questions concerning the fluidity of national identity and its dependence on the contemporary political scene. The initial attempt is to investigate the primordial elements that constitute the purity in French music, a term introduced by the ambivalent French musician who bestowed the title of “national composer” on himself. In a detailed central section this thesis provides a stylistic musical analysis of selected piano works that proves how Debussy manipulated the concept of tradition to restore the long-lost French glory, with the First World War looming. In addition, this study is specifically concerned with the effect that the Dreyfus affair had on the French artistic society. The main purpose is to demonstrate the role of the Impressionist Movement in music as a pillar of a newly constructed French national identity which is proven to be an alloy of different cultural perceptions. In conclusion, I argue that Impressionism can be considered as a statement on the sociopolitical instability of the 19th century in France.
