The understanding of the government's legislative acts during the first term (1911 - 1912) of Eleftherios Venizelos in the Athens Press
Summary:
The development of Constitutionalism during the European Enlightenment period is a special act of human societies. The Epidaurus Constitution of 1822 was the founding act of birth of the Greek Nation-State, forming the starting point of the Greek historical institutionalism. Since then, the drafting and revision process constituted special events in the Greek political history. This is because, through the revision process, a series of primary Constitutional changes is being achieved, such as the abolition, modification, replacement, interpretation and the addition of new provisions to an already adopted Constitution, while revealing the limits and intentions of the people's representatives in the specific spatial and temporal context. The subject of the present study was the approach and criticism of the Press regarding the Revision of the Constitution of 1864 and of the legislative work that followed until the “final” completion of the proceedings of the Revisionary Assembly and the announcement of the elections of March 1912. The four representative newspapers of the time, Estia, Kairoi, Empros and Skrip, were studied mainly on the basis of the front-page opinion articles that were published and hosted in those newspapers during the operation of the Second double Revisionary Assembly. These articles constituted either the views of the writing group of each news agency, or the opinions of various intellectuals of the period, politicians, University Professors, legal experts and men of letters. Finally, these newspapers -both supportive and non-supportive to the Liberal government- assessed, based on their ideological beliefs, the changes that were noted, illuminating facets and aspects of the crucial social reality of the time.
