A Research on Primary Students's Knowledge about Personal Hygiene and School Safety

This postgraduate project is elaborated as part of the MSc "Science and Education" of the Department of Primary Education of the National University of Athens. Its objective is to assess, measure and evaluate the level of knowledge of primary school students about personal hygiene and safety. By using properly designed questionnaire a comparison about the level of students’ knowledge is being attempted, as far as students’ age (10 and 12 years old) and gender are concerned. Finally, the project is trying to determine whether students are able to distinguish situations which may cause an accident in the courtyard of a primary school. According to the results of the survey there are not statistically significant differences between the level of students’ knowledge of different age or different gender, regarding personal hygiene and security. In addition, students have the ability to recognize risk situations as an accident challenge. However, the responses of 10 years old students differ from the 12 years old ones regarding risk factors, which is actually confirmed by the literature review. To sum-up, this study revealed that both boys and girls of 10 and 12 years old of primary school have a good level of knowledge regarding personal hygiene and safety, as well as they are able to recognize and identify factors that threaten their physical integrity. Finally, primary school children are able to prevent themselves from accidents.
