The functions of 'etsi' in modern greek, according to the theory of Discourse Grammar
Summary:
While traditional grammar classifies 'etsi' in adverbs, its function is not always adverbial. Georgakopoulou and Goutsos (1999) notice that 'etsi' is a discourse marker when it appears at the beginning of the sentence or period. The aim of this study is to discover all the functions of 'etsi' in modern greek and to examine how did its textual function appear.
The present study follows the theoretical framework of Discourse Grammar, as it is described by Kaltenböck et al. (2011) and Heine et al. (2013). The research shows that when 'etsi' has the non-adverbial functions of the confirmation marker and the subordinate conjunction, it is not part of the syntax of the sentence. In a second step that can follow this process, it can be grammaticalized and become a discourse marker. Instead of the previous studies where discourse markers are interpreted as a result of grammaticalization or pragmaticalization of units of the sentence, here grammaticalization is still necessary for the creation of a discourse marker, but the unit has already been transferred to the domain of the organization of the text.
