Fitness and Social Identity Theory
Summary:
During the span of their life, people seek to create a positive identity in order to gain confidence and satisfaction, and they achieve that by joining different social groups. In this study, we try to shed some light in the meaning of Fitness and the identity people form or adopt by taking part in social groups that demand physical exercise, and conformity in a certain lifestyle and / or behavior. These groups also have their own language and rituals, as well as social representations about life in and out of the group. In a quantitative research, through a series of in – depth interviews we discover that fitness, in terms of health, discipline, the need for social interaction and body image, is turning into one of the emergent points of reference for creating a personal identity in postmodernity. Research on the field of appearance modification through the eyes of Social Identity Theory is of the utmost importance for the understanding of social life in an image – ridden world.
