Summary:
Τhis research attempts to investigate the communication difficulties between parents-teachers of Greek private elementary school, that are potential conflict factors. Teachers and parents are two important companions and benchmarks for students that form decisively the track of each student, from the first school steps until the end of school life. Not much light is shed upon parental involvement in greek elementary education so far, while private elementary education field seems totally unexplored. In this research, semi-structured type interviews were conducted among eight greek private school teachers, to present the aforementioned issue through their experience.
It was found that teachers prefer the natural programmed communication with parents with common agendas in a sincere basis, respecting the limits on their professional collaboration. Basic difficulties in their communication were found to be the beautification of reality, as well as the fact that private schools’ parents are treated as customers, who sometimes see teachers as their employees. Furthermore, teachers of the study indicate that communication with their students acts as a bridge of communication between teachers –parents. Finally, regarding conflict issues, cases of internal conflict for teachers and interpersonal conflict between parents and teachers were reported.
