The political role of the great families during the palaiologan period
(era). The persons and the texts
Summary:
This thesis aims to explore and examine, through the intertextuality, total approach and in the context, the political role of the great families. First of all, the political role of the great families is the result from the features of late Byzantium (1258-1453). Primarily, the great families with political role are classified as Constantinopolitan and provincial families. Moreover, the first are classified as imperial families, as upgraded families, whose their origin are localized in the komnenian period, as families from the Nicean period and as new families, who appear on the political stage during palailogan era. Finally, there are families who tend to be marginalized in authority. In addition, the political role is determined by the political action of the provincial families and their connection with the central authority or their encouragement of the development of resistance. The local Chroniques contribute to a great measure in the description of the political role. Furthermore, the political role is used to have a strongly centralized system to the functions in the members of their families (The catalogues of administration are preserved the offices and the titles, although the members of the families are preserved to a limited extent). The narrative sources declare, describe and analyse the political role in the light of each writer. Moreover, the political role is established on the network, which is developed between the house of Palaiologues and the other great families. The close family relationship and the friendship support the network of the paleologan era. Through the research of the complicated political action of the great families, derived from the written sources, it is clear that the palaiologan era combine two tensions: the glory of Byzantium, which breathe its last, and of the neo- Hellenism with new features.
