Summary:
The purpose of the current study is the examination of whether the military presence of the United States of America in the Gulf Region, which partially contributes to the instability and radicalization of the Muslim populations, affects the Chinese interests in the Middle East, which primarily focus on the unencumbered flow of oil that is of vital importance for the conservation of high economic growth rates. In this context, the first part of the paper studies the matter of energy security by examining the theoretical basis and the Chinese situation. In the second part, we present the history of relations between China and the Middle East, and especially in the post 1993 period (when China starts importing oil), while we present the reasons that led U.S.A. to actively get involved in the Gulf Region as well as the wider region of the Middle East since the World War II. Finally, the third part focuses in the examination of the case study and presents the different opinions that exist in the heart of the Chinese leadership regarding the energy security of China, in order to determine whether they essentially affect the smooth importation of oil in Beijing. At the same time, we include the U.S.A. standpoint where needed, for a better explanation of the Chinese side.
