Summary:
The major historical developments that took place in the countries of North Africa and Middle East as part of the "Arab Spring" marked a new era characterized by the emergence of democratic government. While the uprisings and the popular demonstrations in the arab countries have achieved their goals for modernization and democratic reforms to a greater or lesser extent, in Syria they led to the outbreak of a bloody civil war berween the authoritarian regime of Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian people, a conflict that has also received religious implications, as it reflects the conflict between "Sunni" and "Shia Muslims". What is more, the conflict has become a "zero-sum game", as result of competing strategic interests of the involved countries and organizations on the basis of competition for power and influence in the Middle East. These external actors aiming exclusively at achieving their goals and satisfying their interests in SYria are unable to distinguish or even to negotiate alternatve options that could lead to the end of the civil war. At the same time, the exernal actors are indirectly involved in the conflict having chosen a "proxy war", offering economic or military support depending on their interests either to the government of Bashar al-Assad either to the dissidents.
The fact that among the countries involved in the Syrian crisis are the more powerful states, which determine the developments in foreign affairs and shape the attitude of the international community implies that the latter has been inactive toward Syrian civil war, as it has been trapped between the conflicting interests of the most powerful members. As a result the chances for an immediate end to the conflict is extemely limited with tragic consequences for the Syrian people. The basic working hypothesis and simultaneously the purpose of this community towards the Syrian civil war, due to the conflicting intersts of its powerful member states contribute to the prolongation of the conflict and limit the prospects for its immediate termination.
