Evaluation of the various biopsychosocial factors in temporomandibular disorder patients with orofacial pain.
Summary:
According to the modern biopsychosocial model of health orofacial pain (OP) is the result of a complex interaction within several biological, psychological and social factors.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the various biopsychosocial factors that can be implicated as burdensome and lead to OP, affecting the intensity and chronicity of the symptoms, in TMD patients.
Material and Methods: A clinical research on 115 people was carried out. Participants were divided into two groups, according to (DC/TMD). In the group of patients classified 61 TMD patients, while in the control group classified 54 people with various dental problems and without TMD.
All participants were asked to fill out: (a)sociodemographic data form, (b)form of medical commemorative, (c)Graded Chronic Pain Scale(GCPS v2), (d)Oral Health Impact Profile(OHIP-14)(greek version), (e)Patient Health Questionnaire-4(PHQ-4) and (f)Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Also, blood pressure (systolic-diastolic), cardiac pulse and oxygen saturation were recorded.
Results: According to statistical results, seems that the occurrence, the intensity and chronicity of OP in TMD patients and the functional limitation in these patients due to pain symptoms, are associated with comorbid medical conditions, the existence and gravity of psychological disorders (anxiety, depression) and the existence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Each one of these factors, but also on the whole, affects negatively the patient’s oral health quality of life.
Conclusions: In this study, correlation between the various biopsychosocial factors and OP in TMD patients is confirmed. Therefore, the need for multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach of the OP patients is highlighted.
