Expressions of space in the picture descriptions by Albanian speakers of Greek as a second language
Summary:
This study deals with the linguistic concept of space. The participants were adult speakers with mother language, Albanian and foreign language Greek, who described a picture to someone who could not see it. The data had two sources of origin, the PhD Thesis of Vasiliki Kanzou (2010) and the personal collection of data.
The research questions were the length of descriptive texts and the density of spatial information per language level, the type of locative information per language level, the similarities and differences between children and adults with the same mother language (Albanian) and the role of the level of language skills in the descriptive texts.
It has been observed that the length of the descriptive texts and the density of spatial information increases as the level of speaking of the speakers increases. All speakers codify the topological and projective expressions, but there are some individual differences. As far as topological expressions are concerned, speakers further encode the concepts of inclusion - neutral placement, deixis and proximity. As far as projective expressions are concerned, speakers prefer to use different axes according to their level.
Also, similarities and differences were observed between children and adults in their productions, revealing that despite the same mother language (Albanian) and the same foreign language (Greek), age, experience and development play a decisive role in its production of description. Finally, the role of the speaker's level of language skills in making choices to describe the image is very important as it determines how the speakers describe the poster, which tools they use and whether or not they make mistakes in their oral production.
