The Avars and Persians in the History of Theophylactos Simocattes
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to point out the similarities and differences regarding the image of Avars and Persians in relation to the image of the Byzantines, as it is presented through the historical work of Theophylactos Simocattes.
During the reign of Maurice and in general during the 6th and 7th century, Byzantium was facing many challenges in the Balkan peninsula, as well as in the East. The Avars in the Balkans -combined with the invasions of the Slavs- and the Persians from the East, were the main challenges the Empire had to face. Through the narration of Simocattes, we can detect how the Avars and the Persians were seen by the historian and subsequently find out data on how the Byzantines imaged these people.
In order to find the characteristics attributed to Avars and Persians, in Simocattes narration, different aspects of the Simocattes’ History should be examined. For this purpose, we should examine the letter- writing and the public orations produced by Avars, Persians and Byzantines. Doing so, their competence in the rhetoric art will emerge.
Moreover, Simocattes’ characterizations of the leaders of Avars and Persians in comparison to the Byzantines’ provide us significant help, in order to reconstruct the image of these people as it was assimilated by the Byzantines.
Finally, the military tricks and maneuvers from the armies of Avars and Persians show the military genius of their Generals and the capability of the armies they commanded. As a result, the narration of Simocattes let us pick up helpful clues regarding the image of Avars and Persians.
