Summary:
This thesis tries to penetrate into two areas which are part of the social, economic and political affairs: the political discourse and the media, through the case study of an educational reform.
Educational reforms are a phenomenon of the political life of a country, that is closely linked to educational policy and the articulation of political discourse that accompanies any change. This political discourse is not limited to declarations, proclamations and legislative texts, but takes the form of political opposition to reaching the general public, using Press as a leverage tool.
Thus, the study of the role of the Press gives another view of relationships and interactions developed in politics and political discourse evolves into a game of power.
The news, declarations and political confrontations with the occasion of the educational reform of Gerasimos Arsenis, come into the communicator microscope to illustrate the news behind the news and mechanisms influencing public opinion.
Our research hypothesis is based on the belief that the Press uses a variety of lenses to highlight or degrade an educational policy by portraying it in the appropriate way, depending on power relations, the interests it serves, and the target group that it wants to influence, thus shaping Positive or negative attitude towards this policy. In short, we are attempting to demonstrate through a case study (Arsenis’ reform) if and how the press exercises power, confirming its classification as "Fourth Power".
The research process is based on the principles of content analysis and the findings of the research are analyzed on the basis of the political discourse analysis. It is also used as a tool, a model of analysis of the communication process we developed for the purposes of this thesis.
From the analysis of the research data it is clear that the Press is a subset of a huge social-economic-political-ideological structure capable of altering to a little bit the original political intention, which eventually becomes co-shaper and co-expression of education policy and depending on the power of the majority, cultivate the acceptance or rejection of the policy.
