Attitudes of trainee cardiologists towards their specialty
Summary:
Introduction: The decision of physicians for specialty choice is multifactorial. In Greece there is a complete lack of direction of medical students to choose specialties.
Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the views of junior doctor’s cardiology for their specialty.
Methodology: This is a qualitative study. The sample of the study consisted of 10 doctors from cardiology department of G.H.N. "Agios Panteleimon" - G.H.W.A. "Agia Varvara". The information were collected by the method of interview. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed based on the literature review. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed thematically. Physicians interviewed for the following sections: when they decided to choose specialty, if they were directed by someone for choosing their specialty, what were the criteria for the specialty choice, if they were satisfied with their specialization, what was the best and what the worst experience they had, what problems they had, whether they had negatively regarded by colleagues another specialist, if they designated another specialist colleagues negatively and if the cardiology as a specialty was their first choice.
Results: There was no one trainee who has chosen specialty before being introduced into medical school. Six participants reported that they chose specialty during their studies and four after taking the degree. All participants stated that there was no guidance from anyone. The specialty selection criteria included how to deal with patients, vocational rehabilitation, prestige, financial gains, the flexible hours and the little standby time. Most physicians were satisfied with their choice in the specialty of cardiology, and the positive experiences included mainly the survival and the gratitude.
Conclusions: It is necessary to create a course in order to guide the junior doctors and make a number of clinical simulations during the studies.
