The episode of Hypsipyle in the "Argonautica" of Valerius Flaccus: a literary approach
Summary:
This current MA Thesis focuses on the second book of the "Argonautica" of Valerius Flaccus, and on the presentation of Hypsipyle in particular, who is the key character in the description of the massacre in Lemnos, as well as in her subsequent encounter with Jason. This research aims to offer a definition of Hypsipyle's character, whom the poet himself connects to his poetic endurance, in the "Argonautica". The interpretation of the episode is based on both the links with the whole epic, and the intertextual connection to Valerius' epic predecessors, that is Apollonius Rhodius' "Argonautica" and Virgil's "Aeneid". The thesis is structured on three chapters: the first chapter focuses on the similarities and deviances between Hypsipyle and the major model of Dido in the "Aeneid"; the second one presents and analyses the "ekphrasis" appearing in this episode; finally, the third and last one revisits the entire episode as a "mise-en-abyme" of the "Argonautica". Hypsipyle will appear to be included in the group of those heroes who share parallels with the poet of the "Argonautica", while her behaviour and choices will prove to be symbolic of the unique way with which Valerius handles the mythic and epic tradition.
