Core vocabulary of the thematic field of «Shopping» in coursebooks of learning Modern Greek as L2: the relationship between intentional and incidental vocabulary teaching in regard with the development of the language material
Summary:
The aim of this paper is to examine some recent coursebooks of learning Modern Greek as second/foreign language, in regard with the choices they make about the vocabulary that is intended to be taught in the thematic field of «Shopping» and the way this vocabulary is presented. Specifically, it is being investigated to what extent these coursebooks include some selected vocabulary types that have been considered as coral by a certain previous research based on Digital Corpora, and what these textbooks tend to choose (explicitly and implicitly) as core vocabulary in the units that are relative to this thematic field. Moreover, the fundamental underlying principles in the development of this language material are being searched focusing on the way the complementarity between the methods of intentional and incidental vocabulary teaching is exploited. To this end, the theoretical frame of the research is being presented first, followed by the way the research was conducted, the results and the relative discussion. Finally, the most important inferences that come out f tbis research are being cited, along with the corresponding limitations of the study.
