The dynamics of the relationship between a museum, an archaeological excavation and the local society: the case study of Hierapetra.
Summary:
The main subject of the following master thesis is the investigation of the relationship and the dynamics that develop between a museum, an archaeological excavation and the local society. The investigation focuses on the case study of the Archaeological Collection of Hierapetra, because of the intense excavation activity in the particular region of Crete. The main goal of the thesis is to identify the ways, in which a museum collection can help to redefine the relationship between archeology and the public in order to be understood that material culture does not simply exist to reflect society in a passive way, but it creates it through the acts of its people. In general, the museological proposal for the Archaeological Collection of Hierapetra is based on the inverse course of the archaeological finds, from the museum to the excavation field, in order to highlight the way in which the Museum can be a pillar in the world of excavation and archeology.
