Development of behavioural lateralization in primary and middle school students. The relationship between lateralization and memory.
Summary:
Handedness is a unique feature of man. People seem to be almost the only ones who exhibit a strong preference, at the population level, to the use of one end, the right hand, rather than the left hand. The purpose of this research was to examine the way in which handedness is developed and its relationship to memory. The sample of the survey consisted of 407 children of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade of the elementary school and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade of the high school. The research tools were the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, the quantification assay for handedness preference of Bishop et al., (1996) to evaluate further the handedness, the Peg-Moving test (Annett, 1985. 2002) to assess the ability of the left and right hand during the performance of an activity and three memory tests (poster placard in elementary school classes to examine whether the effect of handedness preference in recalling the poster profile extends to the recognition, a sketch drawing to examine the handedness preference and the mirroring profile in Power Point to examine the handedness with memory. The results of the survey concluded that right-handedness or left-handedness affects the correct memory recall of a face in a photo. Also, the right-handed children are likely to recall to memory the left profile and the left-handed children to recall the right direction profile. The right-handers are more likely to recall a left profile to their memory, although it is actually right and the opposite happens with the left-handers. Finally, the children that draw a left profile or with a left direction, show better skills in using their right hand compared with the left of those who draw the right profile or with a right direction.
