Exploring knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of healthy people and patients towards generic and brand name drugs
Summary:
Greece in recent years has implemented austerity policies due to economic crisis. The health sector especially the pharmaceutical expenditure was the first influenced area. As a result, reducing pharmaceutical costs has became a high-priority target in order to provide a sustainable healthcare system.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions of patient and consumers towards generic and brand- name drugs.
A questionnaire with 39 questions was responded by 82 people in pharmacy ,in Athens. The variables were analyzed with SPSS version 22.
The result showed that half of people don’t know the definition of generic drug. Moreover, they who don’t know the meaning of generic drug were less possible to use generic drug. The reason why they would exchange the brand- name drug with a generic one is the encouragement of their doctor. Only 14,6% of the participators strongly agree that generic drug are safe.
To conclude, most of people have heard about these drugs and the low price was the most popular feature which they are familiar with. Despite the fact that many survey secure their safety patient continue to controvert about their therapeutic value
