Summary:
This thesis aims to highlight the function and utilization of visual folklore material in the textbooks of Ancient Greek, Modern Greek and History used in secondary schools in Greece from 1976 to 2016.

Textbooks are the main teaching medium in contemporary education and they always make use of new technologies, which are highly promoted in the schools of Greece. The text no longer occupies the largest part of the page as visual material is constantly gaining ground. This material is often used in school textbooks so as to give students the impetus for a more active participation in class as it promotes the development of critical thinking and it enhances imagination.

The picture, however, is nothing more than the introduction of art in schools in such a way, indeed, that if used correctly, it can change the social impact of classes. The depictions of traditional and contemporary popular culture in turn offer students the opportunity to learn, interpret, integrate and eventually exploit to their advantage the universal values, attitudes and social ties that govern people’s lives nowadays. Therefore, the introduction of folklore in schools combined with teaching by appropriately qualified teachers, offers learners the ability to understand the past and thus to deal better with the present and ultimately shape the future of society in a more humane way.
