Attitudes of general and special educators in primary schools toward speech therapy services in public schools
Summary:
Speech and language therapy is a new science in Greece, where its evolution and inclusion into schools seems necessary according to foreign researches. The main purpose of this investigation is to identify the attitudes of teachers toward school-based speech-language therapy. In particular, the questions that are being investigated are if there is a difference in the attitudes of teachers according to their demographic characteristics (gender, age, education, years of service, knowledge of speech therapy, experience with children with speech and language problems) and if there is a difference in the views of teachers in regular classes and special educators toward the effectiveness and the way of service delivery speech-language pathology in public schools. The research design of this work involved conducting a quantitative survey involving 170 teachers, 85 special educators and 85 teachers in regular classrooms, from elementary schools in Athens. Data gathered through questionnaire distribution were analyzed using the non- parametric criteria Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis. Before this analysis, the exploratory factor analysis was carried out in order to identify two factors through the whole variables of the questionnaire. According to the findings, it was found that only certain demographic characteristics of teachers such as gender, age, experience with children with speech- language disorders and years of service are related and influence their attitudes toward speech-language therapy in public schools. It has also been found that there is a difference in the views of special and general education teachers and that all teachers have quite agreed on the need for speech therapy in schools.
