Development of a screening test for (centra) auditory processing disorder for children 7-9 years old

Central auditory processing disorder is an area that needs research in Greece, especially in childhood, where the first symptoms are evident, as children with normal peripheral hearing experience difficulties in processing of auditory information that may affect conditions of school attendance. The main purpose of the research is to develop and administer a screening test for the disorder in children 7-9 years old. The research plan included a quantitative survey in which 101 children and 10 teachers from Attica and Biotia participated. Τhe screening battery designed for Greek population and developed based on research evidence, was administered to students. The teachers completed a descriptive questionnaire in order to mention the difficulties of their students. The data was normalized, the screening evaluation resulted from the application of two statistical criteria, and screening efficiency was investigated. According to the results, the distribution of the sample corresponded to the normal distribution, 11 children were positively detected solely by the test battery and 8 children by the combination of the test and the questionnaire, while many teachers’ descriptions were found to match the performance of their students. Consequently, the disorder is present in the population and there is a link, in many cases, between the children found to be at risk for the disorder and those with learning difficulties or other disorders, in which cases further investigation is necessary.
