Teachers’ Knowledge, Perceptions and Attitudes towards Children who Stutter
Summary:
Stuttering is a fluency disorder. Stuttering’s causes are multifactorial and its symptoms can characterize a person’s speech or affect his everyday life in many ways. The purpose of the research is to investigate teachers’ knowledge, perceptions and attitudes towards children who stutter and to examine whether knowledge, perceptions and attitudes can be affected by certain factors.
The researcher used a 22 – item questionnaire. Its’ design was based on two standardized questionnaires, Alabama Stuttering Knowledge (ASK) Test (Crowe and Cooper, 1977) and Teacher Attitudes Toward Stuttering (TATS) Inventory (Crowe & Walton, 1981). The questionnaire was filled by 101 teachers of six Attica’s Primary schools. The participants were 40 men and 61 women. Participants’ anonymity was ensured and the results were used for scientific purposes. Data arose from exploratory factor analysis and principal component analysis.
Research results indicate that factors such as gender, age, years of experience and teacher’s education on stuttering along with his contact with a stuttering student, in the context of a school class, affect teachers’ knowledge, perceptions and attitudes towards children who stutter. Teachers of young age or with less experience promote quality knowledge and more positive attitudes towards managing stuttering at a young age. The findings also suggest that teachers, who were educated on fluency disorders or had a stutterer in their class, were more competent in assisting children who stuttered.
According to the research results, there is a necessity to overemphasize that due to the lack of knowledge about stuttering, teachers must be more educated on fluency disorders or aim at collaborating with interdisciplinary groups of scientists, who help the students who stutter to overcome their difficulty, in order to be able to provide a holistic and high quality modern education to their students.
