The use of History of Science in nutrition education
Summary:
Understanding the Nature of Science is one of the key components of scientific literacy and an objective of modern education reforms while also helping to outline a more positive and humanistic image of Science in the eyes of students. The History of Science can serve as an effective method of contextualized instruction of the Nature of Science. It also helps to better understand the cognitive object. At the same time, storytelling using stories from History of Science has been advocated as a practice that can facilitate the learning, the memorization and the sense- making of the concepts in the natural sciences, while being an attractive way to incorporate the historical and philosophical dimension of Science teaching, making the Science and teaching of it more humanistic. This study is a case study of the implementation of a teaching intervention based on the use of material from the history of Biochemistry using the storytelling method. Our aim was to teach aspects of the Nature of Science, along with the acquisition of nutritional knowledge. The teaching intervention was designed to be applied to students of the fifth grade of Elementary. The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of the intervention on students' nutritional knowledge, on their views on Science and on their interest in Science and the aforementioned teaching process. The results showed that the nutritional knowledge of pupils increased significantly after the intervention with regard to the targeted nutritional concepts. Also, students reflected accurately on ideas for the Nature of Science and appeared to develop a special interest in Science and in the teaching process.
