Summary:
The aim of this research was to try to analyse the transformation process of cinema heroes who appear in the films of three important directors, namely, Kazan, Rossellini and Fassbinder through the lens mostly of Kegan’s theory and supplementary through the lens of Mezirow’s theory. The way in which these heroes develop themselves by constructing their thought differently was examined. The various stages as these are presented in Kegan’s approach were demonstrated as well as the various phases, according to Mezirow’s theory, through which their transformation process went through.
In order to check this paper’s hypotheses the methodological tool of case study was used. The transformation process of nine film heroes of the aforementioned directors was analysed. The main findings of this research was that each hero’s personality development is particularly multilevelled, it includes a lot of parameters and each person could be on a different substage in each one of them. Moreover, the transformation process isn’t a linear one, and it can also include even the retreat to a previous substage. Furthermore, despite the variety of influences that a person can receive, it is possible not to transform oneself, unless s/he tries for that purpose.
