Organization, structure and operation of the structure and operation of the Joint Program of Postgraduate Studies "Education and Human Rights" of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Institute of Education of the University College London. Critical review of the last decade
Summary:
The massification of higher education during the last decades has led to increasing demand for postgraduate studies. Since the 1990s postgraduate studies in Europe have been significantly influenced by the Bologna process and the development of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). In our country, the legal framework for postgraduate studies has undergone significant changes since the 1980s and has taken important steps towards convergence with the EHEA countries.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the structure and operation of the Joint Program of Postgraduate Studies "Education and Human Rights" of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Institute of Education of the University College London. The programme constitutes the first international cooperation at the postgraduate level of the University of Athens.
The research questions concerning the structure and operation of the programme were formulated, which concern the changes that have been made since the beginning of its operation in the academic year 1994-1995 until today. It also examines the profile of the candidates of the program, as well as the number of enrolled students and graduates during the last decade, in order to highlight its particular characteristics.
This is a case study and in order to explore the research questions, the programme’s archives were researched to collect information and data on the institutional framework governing postgraduate studies, the structure of the program, the modules, the tutors, the academic requirements for the students, the number of postgraduate students enrolled and the number of graduates during the last decade. In addition, there has been a quantitative survey of the characteristics of the candidates of the program over the past decade. The descriptive analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS 22.0 statistical package.
Τhe program with its student-centered and interdisciplinary philosophy serves a sensitive subject that is always relevant, from the beginning of its operation until the present time and the particular circumstances our country is facing, although it has many challenges to face in the future due to the socio-economic conditions in both Greece and the United Kingdom.
