Summary:
Maya Deren was an influential artist, her artistic work is the base for the appearance of the American Avant-Garde, she is called the mother of the American Avant-Garde and she continues to be an inspiration to the artists that are committed to experiment with the limits of art. Maya Deren’s body of work combines two different kinds of art, cinema and dance. She is the first artist to do that, the term filmdance ,that characterizes that combination, is attributed to her. This paper examines her artistic work, the way she combined different arts and artistic styles in it and how she influenced the Avant-garde movement in the 20th century.
