Summary:
This thesis seeks to investigate 10 years old childrens’ ability to narrate. Furthermore, we tried to examine if narrative speech can be taught in combination with history lesson.
We chose narration because it is a dominant type of speech in many aspects of social life and human beings are using it since their early childhood. Also , narration is included in all school lessons.
After analyzing basic terms such as cross-curricular teaching , text-linguistics theory , narration and its language characteristics , we proceeded into research. Basic hypothesis of our research is that students historic narrative speech includes evidence about the level of students’ narrative ability and the difficulties they face. That’s why we examined language characteristics ( verbs of action , vocabulary quality , tenses , discourse markers ) in written narrations of a history subject from 32 students of IV class in elementary school.
Our conclusion is that students face difficulties to create proper narrative texts. For this reason , in the end of our thesis we present our suggestion to teach history lesson in order to improve students’ narrative speech.
