Summary:
Virtual reality is one of the latest technological innovations in the field of interpersonal communication with an ever-growing popularity of its applications. Synchronous communication among millions of users as well as the embodied representation in the virtual environments offer an unprecedented experience both in the processes of character creation and development and in social interaction. The concepts of immersion and presence are important components of the experience, as they determine the success of the virtual world. Through researches, experiments and real user events in the virtual world Second Life, we examine the impact of this experience on the perception and interpretation of the virtual and real self, the user’s psychological and physical well-being and the development and maintenance of social relationships, as long as SL is regarded as one form of community within which users become socially active. The findings suggest that, although the communication is technologically mediated, the above procedures are similar to those of the real world. User’s motivation of engagement in a virtual world (escapism, construction of alternative identities, socialization) has significant affects to the overall experience. Through their avatar, the user reinterprets himself/herself, identifies elements of his/her character, produces emotions and develops relationships.
