Artists' Books in Europe and in the USA from the 15th to the 20th century. Evolution stages - Distinguish creators
Summary:
The Artists’ Books form a separate category of books, which characterised by the fact that they have made of artists. Their interference has to do with the draw and the attention of the pictures and the texts, the selection of the materials, the print and the publishing. These books namely, are made through the personal artistic view of the artists, as it happens in the same way in the painting and the sculpture.
They developed mainly in Europe and in the USA and created first time in 1498 by Albrecht Dürer. From that time and then many terms are used to distinguish them from the typical kind of books and from their variations. The most famous terms are two. The French Livre d’ Artiste appeared in the end of the 19th century and signifies the books which have created of artists, but with the initiative of art-lover businessmen. The other term is the English Artists’ Books, which appeared around 1970 and signifies the books which use the form of the books to create original pieces of art, usually regardless the texts.
Till the end of the 19th century and occasionally during the 20th, these books express the artistic quests of their creators and address to the elite of well-educated people with artistic interest and the financial capacity to buy them. Later, during the 20th century, they acquired the experimental style of the avant-garde art movements they represent and addressed to the people who are interesting in the art, the politics and the social problems.
In Greece, the historical facts from the 15th till the 20th century didn’t support the creation of the Greek Artists’ Books. They appeared in the 1930’s from artists who had connections with the European artistic happenings. They were who start to create their books and form their style. The good-looking typography, the illustration and the use of high quality materials depict the relation that the Greek Artists wanted to have with the books. The experimental publishing and the artistic interfering, through the conceptual point of view, appeared the recent years and they don’t identify the majority of the Greek Artists’ Books production.
Through a thorough search into the Artists’ Books, one observes that they compose an art form which continually change and give revolutionary aspects. Their creators search about their form, their use, even though their own existence, through experimental approaches or through traditional patterns, which supply a living artistic area.
