Synthesis of hydroxytyrosol derivatives with antioxidant activity. Study of their activity against age-related macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease
Summary:
Hydroxytyrosol is a simple phenol primarily found in the olive leaves and pulp. A number of studies have evidence that the above mentioned molecule has powerful antioxidant activity and as result, it could protect against a broad spectrum of diseases related to oxidative stress. Within this context, it was considered interesting to synthesize a series of some novel hydroxytyrosol derivatives, in order to study their antioxidant activity as well as their ability to protect against age-related macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease. Prompted by the above mentioned considerations, we describe here the design and synthesis of hydroxytyrosol esters and several other analogues, which possess the hydroxytyrosol scaffold and bear modifications on the carbons of the catechol side chain.
