Attachment Styles and Dysfunctional Career Thoughts
Summary:
The present study investigated the relationship between Adult Attachment Styles, Adult Attachment Styles dimensions (anxiety and avoidance) and Dysfunctional Career Thoughts in Greek Undergraduate Students as well as the role of various demographic characteristics (gender, age, socio-economic status, country of origin, place of residence, University School attendance, parental educational level, family income status, parental occupation, number of siblings and birth order) in those beliefs. In addition, there was an attempt to adapt the Career Beliefs Patterns Scales (CBPS) questionnaire to Undergraduate Student’s population. The sample of this study was 199 Undergraduate students from the Attica region, 18-53 years old · the majority of whom were women. The participants completed self-report questionnaires about demographic information, adult attachment styles (regarding how they behave in their romantic relationships), and dysfunctional career thoughts. The results showed that anxiety contributes to dysfunctional career beliefs. People with secure attachment style or those with insecure attachment style, but without the anxiety attachment style factor, tend to have less dysfunctional thoughts concerning their career. Also, it was observed that gender, birth order, age and educational level of the father are factors related to dysfunctional beliefs in some areas, regarding the way participants make decisions about their careers (Proficiency beliefs, Tolerance, Pessimism).
