Summary:
The theme of our discussion was both the approach of two figures of the “child of the Lord”; namely that of “Immanuel” and that of the “Suffering Servant” and their relationship with one another within Isaiah 7 and 9, 42, 52 and 53. The result of the present research is the new that this work offers.
First of all, we examined the book wholly, as a whole, according to the demands of contemporary research, without disregarding its individual sections. In the discussion we implemented the historical-critical method by analyzing the structure and the passages, and with the use of analysis of terms, concepts and influences from other texts. We quested after the interpretation of the world “christos” which declares a person of human or divine origin whose aim is to bring a better future. Such a hope is dominant for Israel, although this expectation does not definitely mean it is about the anticipation of a Messiah. It presumably refers to a model of Israeli eschatology.
The main theme of our research about the “child of Yahweh” relates to his identity.
“The child of the Lord” often seems to be the nation of Israel or the representative of Israel or a chosen remnant. Nevertheless, the description of the suffering rather points to the affliction of a person. Moses is a “prospective child”; however, he did not manage to preserve the holiness of the people, since he himself was found to be bound to his passions. Neither did the Second Isaiah who functions as a mediator, albeit not as a deliverer. Cyrus, Darius, Jeremiah and Job have been possible “children.” In relation to the identity it was found that there exists a course, from Israel to the expected Messiah.
The other meaning of the child is that of Immanuel. During the Syro-Ephraimite War, Isaiah formulates a prophesy (7.14-16) for the birth of a child, the characteristics of whom are given in chapter 9. They allude to a later powerful king, yet not to an eschatological deliverer. The speech refers to an ideal king whose work cannot be limited to a human reign.
In the next section we recorded both similarities and differences between Immanuel and the suffering child/servant. They appear to be similar in their common will for the domination of justice and in their reference concerning the light. The word child seemed to conjoin the passages, and the “suffering child” and “Immanuel” constitute the same person. Thus in chapters 7 and 9 he is presented as Immanuel, as mighty and powerful, in the time when the state was mighty as well, and as suffering, in the time when the people were found exiled and disillusioned.
We noted a kind of indeterminacy which keeps the subject of the identification of Immanuel with the suffering child open to doubt. The Christological perspective of the passages is documented by the New Testament and the deepening of the themes is performed by the Fathers of the Church. A prophesy does not cease to be fulfilled. In this way, Israel, the king, etc. function as precursors of the “ultimate messiah”, Jesus Christ.
