The myth and iconography of Cassandra in the archaic and classical periods: emphasis on attic pottery.
Summary:
The prophetess Cassandra, the beautiful daughter of the king of Troy, Priam, is an unfortunate figure of Greek mythology. Her tragic fate had inspired the writers and visual artists of antiquity.
The purpose of this dissertation is the iconographic study and presentation of the Cassandra depictions in the Archaic and Classical periods, with emphasis on Attic pottery from where the majority of the depictions are derived.
The first chapter introduces the background of the research, while the second provides a summary of the literary sources related to Cassandra. The study of iconography is developed in the third chapter, which consists of two parts. The depictions of Cassandra in fine metalwork, engraved gems, wall painting and sculpture are presented in the first part, while the second part is dedicated to pottery. Cassandra's depictions in vase painting are divided into three chapters: the depictions of Cassandra before the fall of Troy, the depictions after the fall and the depictions of the pursuit of Cassandra by Ajax. In the context of the research of the episode of Aias and Cassandra, the iconographic motifs of nudity and the small size of the figures are studied, as well as the depictions of Athena’s xoano, the role of the secondary figures surrounding the central scene and the declaration of the sacred space by the depictions of the altar, the palm tree, the tripod and the column. In the fourth chapter, the composition of the pictorial data is presented and the conclusions of the research are presented, while a detailed catalogue of vase paintings is given, with a description and a bibliography.
