The management of folk culture and the 4th of August periodical press (1936-1941): the magazines I neolaia and To neon kratos
Summary:
The end of the Greek Interwar period is marked by the controversial Metaxas regime. Ioannis Metaxas served as prime minister of Greece from 1936 until his death in 1941. He governed constitutionally for the first four months of his tenure, and thereafter as a dictator at the helm of the 4th of August regime.
In this thesis, I examine the relationship between the Metaxas regime and folk culture as evidenced in the material published in two magazines of this period, namely I neolaia and To neon kratos. The first chapter refers to the historical-political background and the regime’s ideology. In chapter two I focus on Metaxas’s use of folk culture in the regime’s cultural policy. In chapter three, by using examples from articles published in the two forementioned magazines, I analyze how the 4th of August regime used specific aspects of folk culture (such as folktales, folksongs, folk art, etc) as a political tool in its propaganda. Finally, in chapter four I conclude with an overview of how the regime demonstrated its great interest in folk culture and the reasons for this. Also, there is an appendix (chapter five) in which I present articles by various authors published in the magazines I neolaia and To neon kratos, which prove the great interest and use of folk culture by the Metaxas regime to promote its own ideological and political aims.
