Summary:
This thesis discusses quality assessment criteria, regarding the work of Principals in Public Elementary and Preschool Education in Greece. It is a field research using mixed methods (survey and interview), aiming to identify principals’, teachers’ and parents’
perspectives of the existing as well as the desired quality in school principals’ leadership.
We documented the participants’ perspectives of the leadership and management quality factors that literature highlights and we identified the extent to which, they are applied in everyday practice at Greek public schools. We analyzed the perception of selected criteria at the level of “ what should be happening” ( “δέον») and at the level of “what is actually happening”, («είναι») regarding:
1. The dimension of whole- development effectiveness.
2. The dimension of final results quality.
3. The dimension of the fulfillment of participants needs.
4. The whole quality in principals’ leadership as expressed by all of the aforementioned dimensions and their interrelation.
Our goal was to construct an instrument that documents the perceived quality in school principals’ leadership, aiming in evaluation and/ or needs assessment at the level of training and support, in order to achieve maximum leadership quality.
In the first chapter, introduction, the issue to be researched is set, the thesis importance, the goal and research questions are identified, and the main hypothesis is stated. Important terms are clarified, and selected evidence from important research is cited.
In the second chapter, we investigate the context of school Principalship in Greek Public Elementary and Nursery Schools through legislation. We define major concepts (leadership, management, quality) and through the literature review we identify quality criteria.
In the third chapter, we describe the epistemology of our research, the methodology, the research design, the construction and proofing of our research instruments as well as the context of our research.
