Stress and Sleep Disorders: Stress Management Techniques and Pythagorean Self-awareness Technique in insomnia: andomized quasi experimental controlled study
Summary:
Introduction: Insomnia is defined as a subjective symptom of reduced quality and / or quantity of sleep. Non-pharmaceutical interventions such as stress management techniques and the Pythagorean Self-awareness can easily be integrated into its therapy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of stress management techniques and Pythagorean Self-Knowledge as a cure to insomnia.
Method: This was a three parallel group randomized control trial. Insomnia patients were randomized and grouped into a stress management group that followed recorded instructions from a CD, a group applying the Pythagorean Self-knowledge Technique and a control group. All groups received information on insomnia and attended weekly meetings. Participants filled self-reported sleep scales for the assessment of insomnia, sleep quality , depressive symptoms and anxiety. The subjective feeling of stress and "health locus of control" was also assessed. Self-efficacy, anger, emotional intelligence, guilt and shame levels were measured. MBI was also measured through weights scale .Finally, they completed scales for assessment of compliance with therapeutic guidelines and the satisfaction of the intervention.
Results: The intervention group and the Pythagorean Self-Knowledge intervention group significantly reduced insomnia and improved sleep quality. Changes in symptoms of anxiety and depression were not statistically significant. The implementation of Pythagorean Self-Knowledge lead to an improvement in the digital symbol substitution test, in memorizing and in self-efficacy.
Conclusions: Training of insomnia patients in relaxation techniques and Pythagorean Self-knowledge helps to reduce stress and insomnia symptoms. Diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, the guided visualization and Pythagorean Self-knowledge may be regarded as an effective and low-cost non-drug intervention to insomnia.
