Contribution to studying the quality of life in patients undergoing rhinoplasty
Summary:
According to Hesiodos at the wedding of Kadmos and Harmony in Thebes, the muses were singing for the newly married, the following lyrics and immediately were repeated by the invited Gods: “The beauty is beloved and ugliness is hated”.
But what is finally this famous beauty that reverses sensations and fascinates Gods and men? What fascinates people and constitutes vision for sculptures, architectures, poets, painters as well as surgeons of all ages around the world?
The definition of beauty as well as the continuously increasing trend of
people towards it, imposes newer parameters in the field of aesthetic surgery. There
is observed an important increase in demand of aesthetic operations either for
professional or personal needs the last decades. While in older times these
operations were accessible to the few celebrities or professionals of modeling, now are accessible from almost all society’s levels.
This imposes the studying of the effects of aesthetic operations in the quality
of life of those patients. Do they really help in improving their quality of life? Patients realize and enjoy these effects? Are there any implications? All the above questions are important for the evaluation of an aesthetic operation. Rhinoplasty is an aesthetic operation which has the largest increasing trend
among the rest of aesthetic facial operations. Because though, the nose is the
“entrance” of the upper respiratory system, the evaluation of this operation is even more complicated. Thus, despite the aesthetic result which is the patient’s most
required need, we –as medical practitioners – must observe and analyze also the
rest of parameters concerning quality of life. The evaluation of this operation must be done over three important axes: The effect over quality of life, the aesthetic result as well as the functional result (concerning nasal breathing).
Quality of life is a broader definition which describes the whole satisfaction of a patient according to mental and physical health. It cannot be acceptable having a patient with excellent aesthetic result but terrible nasal breathing, as this does not meet the above criteria. Thus, the aesthetic and functional results of rhinoplasty are interconnected meanings which affect commonly the patient’s quality of life.
The current study focuses on the effects of rhinoplasty in quality of life, the aesthetic results as well as the functional results. It is an attempt to assess rhinoplasty as a unique entity and study any possible negative implications.
