Views of physiotherapy's students regarding respiratory physiotherapy in their training
Summary:
Introduction: Training in respiratory physiotherapy in the Physical Therapy Program at Higher Technological Educational Institutions (H.T.E.I) is of major importance. It is one of the most important parts of general and special education that is involved in all the specialized areas of physiotherapy.
Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the views of physiotherapy students regarding respiratory physiotherapy in their training.
Material and Methods: Through personal semi-structured interviews, the views of 30 students of physiotherapy of the Higher Technological Educational Institutions (H.T.E.I) in Greece were investigated. The Grounded Theory method was used to analyze the qualitative data from the interviews.
Results: The analysis of the data, resulted in four thematic categories: "The Theoretical Educational Process", "The Distance between Classroom Theory and the Practice of Respiratory Physiotherapy", "Stimulators for Critical Thinking" and "The Role of the Teacher And his significance ", categories in which the views and experiences of students about their education in the course of respiratory physiotherapy were captured.
Conclusions: The results of the research show that physiotherapy students are largely satisfied with their theoretical training in respiratory physiotherapy as opposed to their laboratory and clinical education and training. The need to strengthen the training of trainers, and in particular clinical trainers, who have to link theory to practice, and to contribute to the student's professional identity by enhancing knowledge, by increasing experience and developing critical thinking in a framework of student-centered adult education. The economic crisis as it was and was expected, played an important role in the quality and excellence of the educational process.
