Museological proposal for the enhancement of an archaeological site: the excavation of ancient Halasarna - Kardamena in Kos
Summary:
Kardamaina, a small town of Kos Island in the East Aegean, 29 km from Kos town and just 5 km from Kos Airport “Hippocrates”, is the most popular summer destination on the island, as it is well known for its beaches with watersports facilities and night life. Despite the fact that in the ancient times the city was the centre of one of the six demes of ancient Kos, the deme of the Halasarnitae and a significant religious center, it still remains, from the archaeological point of view, unknown to the public. The archaeological site of ancient Halsarna is particularly important for the understanding of the organization and evolution of societies in antiquity, because of its stratigraphy expands continuously from the Late Geometric (8th c. B.C.) down to the Late Roman - Early Byzantine period (mid 7th c. A.D.), when the whole region of Halasarna was altogether abandoned.
The process of designing and developing a proposal in order to make accesible the archaeological site of ancient Halasarna aims to revive its history through the archaeological remains, to represent the past, and at the same time to achieve a direct visual contact with the active excavation and a presentation of the evolution of the excavations, giving the opportunity to the public to visit the open archaeological storage and the conservation laboratory, which will be an innovation as far as the Greek data are concerned.
The vision of making the archaeological site of ancient Halasarna in Kardamena at Kos accessible to the general public was the creation of an appealing archaeological destination, based on its integration into the life of contemporary Kardamaina, therefore, through the opening to society and the public benefit we will discover and will learn all of that this space has to teach us.
