Summary:
This research project focuses on the study of the leadership models adopted by the directors in the Greek educational system and explores the possibilities offered by the educational system in terms of developing and highlighting the leadership capabilities of the directors. The goals set were to examine directors’ perceptions of the concept of leader and leadership skills and to explore their views on the role of leadership and leadership skills in the operation of the school and on the other hand the leadership models they adopt. In addition, it was decided to investigate the views of the directors on the possibility of demonstrating their leadership capacities within the framework of the Greek educational system as well as the factors which influence their development as well as the presentation of proposals aimed at creating more favorable conditions for further promotion of these skills. The sample consists of ten directors of both primary and secondary education, who work at public schools of the prefectures of Attica, Fthiotida and Dodecanese. The survey data approach was done using the qualitative method, the data were collected through individual interviews and the content analysis method was used for their processing. The following conclusions were drawn from the analysis of the data: a) the majority of directors in the Greek public school are able to define the concept of leader and his / her most important competences in education, b) recognize the importance of leadership and leadership skills of the director for the effectiveness of the school, c) selects the participative leadership model, d) identifies the obstacles posed by the current legislative framework and e) propose desired changes with a view to creation of more favorable conditions for the emergence of leadership.
