The reasons of Cardiology and Anaesthesiology residents’ not-training in ALS course in general hospitals of Athens: a qualitative study
Summary:
A lack of cardiologists’ and anaesthesiologists‘ training and knowledge in cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been established in many studies, resulting to poor outcomes of cardiac arrest victims. Aim of this qualitative study is to investigate the reasons why medical residents of Cardiology and Anaesthaesiology in 3rd degree General hospitals of Athens have not been trained so far to ALS course. 25 interviews were conducted within three weeks and data have been analysed with the constant comparative method and retrospectively. The study found that the major reasons are the high financial cost of the course, the absence of free-time and burn-out of the residents and the lack of information. As minor reasons could be reported the absence of general interest for a meaningless by some course and the mismatch between the real and the considered by many knowledge in resuscitation. Several interventions could be suggested like lowering the cost to be paid by the residents, an information campaign about the course and the application of some degree of obligatoriness.
